Ledger.com/Start® | Getting started — Ledger

Secure your crypto journey with the world's most trusted hardware wallet.

Welcome to the Ledger Ecosystem

Congratulations on taking the first step toward true financial freedom. By choosing Ledger, you are moving your private keys offline, away from the reach of hackers and malicious software. This guide provides a comprehensive walkthrough of Ledger.com/Start to ensure your assets remain unhackable.

Why Hardware Wallets? Software wallets (hot wallets) are always connected to the internet, making them vulnerable. Ledger keeps your "Private Keys" inside a Secure Element chip, meaning transactions are signed in a disconnected environment.

1. Unboxing and Verification

Before plugging in your device, ensure your package is tamper-free. Ledger devices do not come with a pre-set PIN or a pre-written 24-word recovery sheet.

2. Downloading Ledger Live

Ledger Live is the "Mission Control" for your crypto. It allows you to manage your portfolio, buy/sell assets, and interact with dApps.

System Requirements

Platform Requirement
Desktop Windows 10+, macOS 10.15+, Linux
Mobile iOS 14+, Android 10+

Visit Ledger.com/Start to download the official version. Avoid third-party links or sponsored ads that look suspicious.

3. Initializing Your Device

Connect your Ledger to your computer using the provided USB cable. Use the buttons on the device to navigate the menu.

A Set Your PIN Code

Choose a PIN between 4 and 8 digits. This PIN unlocks your physical device. Do not use easy sequences like 0000 or 1234.

B Write Down Your Recovery Phrase

This is the most critical step. Your device will generate 24 random words. These words are the only way to recover your funds if you lose your device.

THE GOLDEN RULE: Never enter your 24 words into a computer, phone, or app. Never take a photo of them. Ledger will NEVER ask for your recovery phrase. Keep it on the physical paper provided.

4. Installing Apps & Adding Accounts

Once your device is set up, you need to install specific "apps" for each blockchain (e.g., Bitcoin app, Ethereum app).

  1. Open My Ledger in the Ledger Live app.
  2. Allow the manager on your device screen.
  3. Click "Install" for the coins you wish to hold.
  4. Go to "Accounts" and click "Add Account" to generate your public receiving address.

5. Advanced Security & Maintenance

Ownership of crypto means being your own bank. This comes with great responsibility. Follow these industry-standard security protocols:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What if I lose my Ledger?

Your funds are not "in" the device; they are on the blockchain. You can buy a new Ledger and enter your 24-word recovery phrase to regain access immediately.

Can I manage NFTs?

Yes! Ledger Live supports Ethereum and Polygon NFTs natively. You can view them in the "Resources" or "Gallery" section of the app.
